System Restore Using the Recovery Console in Windows XP (Low)

Despite being an outdated version of Windows, very few individuals currently use Windows XP. During regular use, users may encounter the following problems:
1) The system crashed
2) The log-in screen stucks at "Saving your setting" . The same outcomes are obtained while booting in safe mode, safe mode with networking (SMWN), or last known good configuration (LKGC).

To resolve this problem, you need to be patient.

Lets start

Replace the dysfunctional registry hive with a functional version stored on the hard disk by reinstating a system restore point.
  1. Boot from the Windows XP CD or Windows Recovery CD.

  1. Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

  1. If prompted to select the installation of Windows press 1 and press enter.
  2. If prompted for a password enter your administrator password.
    1. At the disk prompt type and enter:
      • cd \
      • cd windows\system32\config
      • ren system system.bak
      • exit
    2. Boot with an XP Setup Cd
    3. Select “R” for repair from the first screen to launch the Recovery Console
    4. Enter the line number of the O.S. listed, then press Enter
    5. If asked, enter the password or simply press the enter key to bypass if no password was created for windows
    6. At the disk prompt type and enter:
      • cd \
      • cd system~1\_resto~1\
      • dir
    7. Numbered Restore points and their creation dates will be listed, ie,  RP##.  Choose a restore point to re-instate by entering its filename and number at the prompt:
      • cd rp??\snapshot
      • dir
    8. Next re-instate the 5 registry files inside the restore point by copying them to the hive folder and overwriting its files:
      • COPY _Registry_machine_system C:\Windows\System32\Config\System
      • COPY _Registry_machine_software C:\Windows\System32\Config\Software
      • COPY _Registry_machine_sam C:\Windows\System32\Config\Sam
      • COPY _Registry_machine_security C:\Windows\System32\Config\Security
      • COPY _Registry_user_.default C:\Windows\System32\Config\Default
      • Next Exit and Remove cd to reboot
